Ethiopia's Mass Waste Risks
Ethiopia's Mass Wasting Risk
Ethiopia is commonly known for having landslides, these consist of rockfall, earth slide, debris, and mudflow. These landslides happen due to consistent rainfall in Ethiopia. Unesco Uganda perfectly words this by stating, "Rains that go on for days while delivering little amounts of water cause more landslides because of high infiltration of the water into the soils causing stagnation." Due to rainfall being so consistent in Ethiopia and overall in certain parts of East Africa, this causes numerous landslides. Especially if there is nothing done to prevent these landslides. Many lives are lost throughout these landslides.
In the image below shows how at risk certain parts of Ethiopia is for landslides. These colors demonstrate High, Medium, Low.
For instance, in March 2017 Ethiopia had one of it's deadliest landslides. This occurred on a dumpsite where many Ethiopians had lived in. " about 50 houses with about seven people living in each of them were built on the rubbish," According to "The Guardian" website. Over 46 Ethiopians unfortunately had lost their lives, 32 female and 14 males. This did not include the many other Ethiopians who were injured. However, due to Ethiopia's financial wealth, nothing can be done to prevent these landslides besides having the victims move to a different dump site. The image below is a picture of the actual dumpsite the landslide occurred, it shows people digging through the mess to find their family members or friends.
