                 Coastal Erosion In Ethiopia


     Although Ethiopia is not directly near the coast of Western Africa so Ethiopia doesn't necessarily face coastal erosion. However, it is still near Western Africa and located in Africa. (See image below).

This means Ethiopia can still face the aftermath of coastal erosion. For example, a huge one can be the "cost of land", according to OneGreenPlanet. This can also include their crops being damaged which can cause food shortages. Despite not finding much about coastal erosion in Ethiopia, Western Africa loses almost 3.8 million dollars alone trying to recover from Coastal Erosion. Climate change has further increased coastal erosion in Western Africa to dangerous rates. Which causes them to face terrible amounts of flooding. 

 To reduce coastal erosion in Africa, their government would need to implement "Breakwaters", they considered barriers put along the shoreline to help prevent flooding and further erosion. There are also other similar solutions such as "Seawalls, revetments, bulkheads, and groins", according to the Federal Emergency Management Agency.                             Ethiopia's Earthquakes and Seismicity Ethiopia has faced few earthquakes throughout the years. However, their earthquakes can cause large amounts of damage throughout Ethiopia. For example, in 1950, Ethiopia had a strong earthquake that had taken the lives of 70 people.       Their earthquakes are typically caused by their rifts. For example, the Ethiopian Rift system is connected to the East African Rift system makes the country seismically active.  Ethiopia has also been found to have 5 seismic zones! This makes Ethiopia even more prone to earthquakes, unfortunately. For the year 2023, Ethiopia has already faced 10 earthquakes, typically ranging from 4.4 to 5.5!  What Ethiopia can do is educate its citizens on how to react accordingly when facing an earthquake. Doing this can help save many lives from the consequences of an earthquake. The steps shown above are highly recommended in every country when trying to be safe from an earthquake.
