Final Hazard Report; Ethiopia     In Ethiopia, they face primarily only 2 kinds of natural hazards. Surprisingly enough these two hazards occur in the same region. These two hazards are flooding and droughts, these hazards typically happen in the Somali region due to climate change, human interference, and overall due to seasonal changes. However, droughts tend to happen due to h uman interference such as deforestation, overgrazing, and over-cultivation thus causing droughts to become more and more common in the Somali region. Flooding, it is mainly due to heavy rainfall called torrential rain. This type of rain is heavy, hard, and fast (pictured below), which is a huge main cause of flooding in Ethiopia especially with hardly any drainage in Ethiopia besides natural drainages such as rivers. Ethiopia has little to no warning or precautions taken when floods and droughts happen, so these hazards affect people in horrendous ways, which is why these hazards need to become a priority an

Coastal Erosion in Ethiopia

Image
Coastal Erosion In Ethiopia       Although Ethiopia is not directly near the coast of Western Africa so Ethiopia doesn't necessarily face coastal erosion. However, it is still near Western Africa and located in Africa. (See image below). This means Ethiopia can still face the aftermath of coastal erosion. For example, a huge one can be the "cost of land", according to OneGreenPlanet. This can also include their crops being damaged which can cause food shortages. Despite not finding much about coastal erosion in Ethiopia, Western Africa loses almost 3.8 million dollars alone trying to recover from Coastal Erosion. Climate change has further increased coastal erosion in Western Africa to dangerous rates. Which causes them to face terrible amounts of flooding.   To reduce coastal erosion in Africa, their government would need to implement "Breakwaters", they considered barriers put along the shoreline to help prevent flooding and further erosio

Ethiopia's risk for Extreme Weather Events

Image
Ethiopia's Risk For Extreme Weather Events     Ethiopia is consistently at risk for extreme weather events. Extreme weather events that are possible in Ethiopia are  Floods, droughts, heatwaves, and wildfires. They are commonly found throughout the summer, fall, and winter. However,  of the 4 extreme weather events Ethiopians face, rapid floods are more deadly. For example, they develop quickly and cause damage to the land by overflooding crops and homes.      For instance, in the Somali region of Ethiopia, the most recent flash flood occurred 5 days ago on April 4, 2023. According to FloodList, it had killed 29 Ethiopians and impacted over 200,000. The author also mentions how this has been happening since mid-march, really demonstrating how severe the flash floods are in Ethiopia. It continues to impact their lives by displacing Ethiopians from their home, ruining their livestock, and as well as their crops. These flash floods Ethiopians face, releasing a horrific chain rea

Ethiopia's Mass Waste Risks

Image
Ethiopia's Mass Wasting Risk     Ethiopia is commonly known for having landslides, these consist of  rockfall, earth slide, debris, and mudflow. These landslides happen due to consistent rainfall in Ethiopia. Unesco Uganda perfectly words this by stating, "Rains that go on for days while delivering little amounts of water cause more landslides because of high infiltration of the water into the soils causing stagnation." Due to rainfall being so consistent in Ethiopia and overall in certain parts of East Africa, this causes numerous landslides. Especially if there is nothing done to prevent these landslides. Many lives are lost throughout these landslides.            In the image below shows how at risk certain parts of Ethiopia is for landslides. These colors demonstrate High , Medium , Low .               For instance, in March 2017 Ethiopia had one of it's deadliest landslides. This occurred on a dumpsite where many Ethiopians had li

Ethiopia's Volcanic Activity

Image
Ethiopia's Volcanic Activity     Ethiopia has around 53 Holocene Volcanos with  Erta'Ale volcano being the most active since 1967.  However, the most recent eruption in Ethiopia occurred in 2017 . Which happened to be by Erta'Ale, this volcanic eruption remained active until 2019. Ethiopia has so many volcanos primarily due to rifting in Africa, which causes Africa to break apart. This not only increases the number of volcanos Ethiopia receives but as well as dangerous eruptions.  Due to this increase, Ethiopia facing an increase in volcanoes and eruptions, they have faced 8 major volcanic eruptions. 4 of these eruptions were caused by the same 2 volcanoes. These volcanoes were,  Dubbi, Dabbahu, the Manda Hararo Rift, and Nabro.      To survive a volcanic eruption you must seek shelter indoors. However, if you can't find shelter indoors you must cover your face with any mask or cloth to avoid inhaling ash and smoke. However, these tips can vary

Ethiopia's Earthquakes and Seismicity

Image
Ethiopia's Earthquakes and Seismicity Ethiopia has faced few earthquakes throughout the years. However, their earthquakes can cause large amounts of damage throughout Ethiopia. For example, in 1950, Ethiopia had a strong earthquake that had taken the lives of 70 people.       Their earthquakes are typically caused by their rifts. For example, the Ethiopian Rift system is connected to the East African Rift system makes the country seismically active.  Ethiopia has also been found to have 5 seismic zones! This makes Ethiopia even more prone to earthquakes, unfortunately. For the year 2023, Ethiopia has already faced 10 earthquakes, typically ranging from 4.4 to 5.5!  What Ethiopia can do is educate its citizens on how to react accordingly when facing an earthquake. Doing this can help save many lives from the consequences of an earthquake. The steps shown above are highly recommended in every country when trying to be safe from an earthquake.

Ethiopia's Location

Image
Ethiopia's Location     Ethiopia can be found on the horn of Africa and is considered the 10th largest country in Africa according to Ethiopian Embassy.     Regarding Ethiopia's tectonic plates, Northern Ethiopia can be found near the African and Arabian plates . However,  Northern Ethiopia is located near these two plates, so they often experience destructive earthquakes from the African Plate. The African Plate is responsible for " several large earthquakes (with M > 7) that have occurred in the past.", according to Meghraoui, Mustapha. Whereas for the Arabian Plate is responsible for tsunamis, volcano eruptions, and earthquakes. The excessive flooding Ethiopians face can be caused by tsunamis and tidal waves from the Arabian plate.  However, due to Ethiopia's economy being poor, recovering from a flood or an earthquake can take some time. Not much can be done to prevent this, however, to keep people safe they sho
